The Great Famine and the Ottoman Aid (1847)
• Sultan's Donation: During the Great Famine, Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I donated £1,000 to help starving Irish people.
• Secret Grain Ships: When British protocol limited official relief, the Sultan secretly sent ships laden with food and grain. Because British authorities blocked entry to Dublin's port, the ships sailed further north to unload cargo at the Port of Drogheda.
• The Town Crest: In gratitude for this lifeline, Drogheda incorporated the star and crescent of the Ottoman flag into its municipal crest—a symbol that later made its way onto the badge of Drogheda United F.C.. |
